Our previous church building suffered in a number of ways:
- It was not quite big enough for the locality, so we want room for modest growth
- It was built in stages and the shape of the main worship space has ended up long and thin
- The structure was such that it would permanently suffer from damp and would always require a lot of maintenance; there were questions about the long term viability of the structure
- New legislation to ensure that public buildings are accessible to disabled people required us to reorganise our buildings in a number of areas
- Work was required to keep up with health and safety requirements
- In many respects the buildings were not up to contemporary expectations of a public building
- Investment was unavoidable at that time, but the structural limitations ruled out major renovations and modernisation of the existing building - such expenditure would have probably proved to be a poor investment.
For all these reasons we took the costly decision to rebuild entirely, so that we could establish a place for Christian worship suitable for the next 100 years!
The new building is suitable for corporate worship and for many community activities. The front of the new building (Right, above) is two storey, providing 5 small meeting or consulting rooms. The main worship space seats just over 200 worshipers. The new lounge and adjoining kitchen provide an excellent space for coffee gatherings and lunch clubs. The new building has a basement in which there is an excellent space for children's and youth work. Also in the basement are the toilet facilities and the main storage space. The three floors of the building will be served by both stairs and a lift, providing easy access to every room in the building.
