James Bloice Smith

Biography:
James became a Christian as a child and owned it in a new way in his late teens. He studied psychology and biochemistry at Bangor University, teaching at King's College, London University, and theology at Regent's Park College, Oxford University. He has worked as a Medical Laboratory Technician, in North London as a science teacher and for eight years in student evangelism and discipleship with Agapé.

His first pastorate was as assistant minister at Park Road Baptist Church, Peterborough. He has been minister at Headington Baptist Church since 1996. James is married to Marion and has a son, Daniel, who works as an engineer, and a daughter, Naomi, who is a student.

His interests include people in general, getting into boats whenever possible, the Headington community and 'fiddling about'-making things and fixing things.

Biography: Chris became a Christian at the age of 11. He has studied theology at 3 different academic institutions for 9 years in total - Birmingham University, London School of Theology and the University of Oxford. He worked for five years with national students in the UK (with UCCF) and then for seven years amongst international students (with Friends International). He also taught New Testament Studies in North India for 3 years.

Chris is married to Breeze and they have two daughters, Petra and Tia. His hobbies and interests include reading, classical music, film, DIY and Sport.

Following ministerial training at Regent's Park College, Oxford (during which he was on placement with us at HBC), Chris was ordained as a Baptist minister and formally inducted as a full-time minister at Headington Baptist Church in September 2009.

Andrew Johnson

Biography:

Andrew came to faith as a child through the witness of his parents.

Andrew has been a member of Headington Baptist Church since 2000. As well as being on the preaching rota he leads a Bible study group for new Christians with his wife Becky.

Since 1991 Andrew has been serving in paid Christian ministry  - nearly 17 years in student work with the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship in the UK and then with the International Federation of Evangelical Students in Portugal. He came to Oxford to coordinate IFES InterAction – a division which sends out students and graduates on mission teams across Europe.

In 2007 Andrew joined the mission agency Latin Link, with the brief of promoting Latino mission across Europe. He will take up the post of Britain and Ireland Team Leader in February 2010.

Alongside his work, Andrew is studying part-time for a diploma in theology at Regent’s Park College, Oxford.

Andrew and Becky have 2 teenage children, Nadia and Bruno, and a dog. To relax he enjoys playing and watching sport and trying his hand at DIY.



Stuart Benham

Biography: Stuart came to faith aged 15 at a Scripture Union camp on the Isle of Arran, and studied Science, then Medicine at Glasgow University graduating in 1988. He did his junior doctor training in Glasgow and Oxford and was appointed a hospital Consultant in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine in 2000 at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

He has received no formal theological training, but reads widely on the New Testament, and in particular in trying to understand what those early Christians would have understood of Jesus teaching and the NT epistles - the context and language of that time. He was encouraged to preach by HBC leadership in 2002, and has continued to do so since, as well as preaching in some of the smaller churches around Oxford.

Stuart is married to Ronnie and they have 3 children - Luke, Melissa and Joel, and live in Headington. His family are a huge joy to him.

Stuart has taught and travelled widely as a doctor, (UK, Africa, Asia) and oversees teaching programmes for many newly qualified doctors at his hospital. Away from work, Stuart enjoys exercise on his bike and golf course, an eclectic range of music, and tries his hand at creative writing.

David and Rosemary Harley

Biography:
David is formerly General Director of OMF International and Principal of All Nations Christian College, UK. Early on in his spiritual journey he served as a missionary in Ethiopia for five years. Prior to his retirement in 2006 he lived and worked for 10 years in Singapore. He still still travels frequently to teach, preach and encourage missionaries in the field. Despite his full schedule he makes time for bird-watching, the third love of his life after his love for God and for his wife, Rosemary.
 
Rosemary has worked with the Church's Ministry amongst Jewish People and has acted as a consultant on missionary training with Crosslinks and the World Evangelical Fellowship. She taught at All Nations Christian College for 15 years , then in Singapore at Discipleship Training Centre and Trinity College.
 
The Harleys have three children and five grandchildren.

Paul Johnson

Biography:

Paul was brought up in a strong Christian family and came to personal faith through a CSSM Beach Mission in Cornwall when he was 9.  He studied Medicine at Leicester University, and trained in Surgery in Leicester, Oxford, Melbourne, and Great Ormond Street Hospital. He is currently Professor of Paediatric Surgery at the John Radcliffe Hospital and Director of the Pancreatic Islet Cell Transplant Programme at the Churchill Hospital. He is also a Fellow of St Edmund Hall at the University.

 

Paul started preaching about 20 years ago and is passionate about the importance of making God’s word relevant and practical for everyday living, as well as the need for God’s people to balance Word and Spirit, and mind and heart. Paul also teaches Medical Ethics on a number of different courses in Oxford and has co-authored a textbook for medical students entitled ‘Making Sense of Medical Ethics’.

 

Paul is married to Hilary and they have 2 teenage children – Thomas and Abigail (Tilly). Away from work, Paul is an avid Chelsea supporter, and also enjoys fly fishing, kayaking and canoeing, walking along the Ridgeway, listening to a broad range of music, and spending quality time with family and friends (especially if it involves a barbecue and fireworks!).


Lynette Teagle

Biography:
Lynette was born and grew up in Singapore, and became a Christian at the age of 12. She came to Britain in 1990 to go to University, where she met Peter. They married in 1993, and have three children: Sam, Laura and Madeline, ages ranging from 13 to 6. Lynette has an LLB Hons from Liverpool University, and a Master's in Christian Ministry (Biblical theology and cross-cultural ministry) from the Discipleship Training Centre in Singapore. Lynette has worked in a bank in Singapore, taught in university in China and been an editor for a Singaporean Christian magazine. Since moving back to Britain in 2000, Lynette and Peter have worked in full-time ministry to international students, first in Birmingham and now in Oxford. Lynette lists her hobbies and interests as: music (especially singing/playing Christian and folk music with friends and family), reading, foreign films and television, travel, and cooking and baking.
